Joel Yager, M.D.
Joel Yager is Professor of Psychiatry and
Vice Chair for Education and Academic Affairs at the University
of New Mexico School of Medicine, and Professor of Psychiatry
Emeritus in the Department of Psychiatry at the David Geffen
School of Medicine, University of California at Los Angeles
(UCLA). His research and scholarly work has focused on eating
disorders, primary care aspects of psychiatry, family therapy,
and stress, among other areas. In 1998 he was awarded an
NIMH grant to establish a program in minority related mental
health services. He has authored or co-authored more than
240 professional articles and book chapters, and has edited
or co-edited seven books including Teaching Psychiatry and
Behavioral Science, The Future of Psychiatry as a Medical
Specialty, and Special Problems in the Management of Eating
Disorders. He currently serves on the editorial board of
five psychiatric journals, including the Harvard Review
of Psychiatry. He has been a member of the American Psychiatric
Association’s Executive Committees and Steering Committees
on Practice Guidelines since its inception. In addition
to other honors, he was an American Psychiatric Association
Distinguished Lecturer, and received the American Medical
Association’s 1989 Joseph B. Goldberger Award in Clinical
Nutrition for work in eating disorders, the 1996 American
Psychiatric Association-National Institute of Mental Health
Vestermark Award for work in psychiatric education, and
the Distinguished Service Award of the Academy for Eating
Disorders in 2001.
